Second session on the secret garden where the geisha share her love by playing music in her very own garden. An intimate moment. Know I can really get into the details see how good I can get it! Time to practice 3 needles and 1 needle liner see how I like to play with it! It is always a good sign when I can ‘impress’ myself at least for a moment. It means I am on the right path even tho I can always find areas for improvement. I wonder if one day I’ll ever be able to draw all of this without tracing over any of it It’s coming nicely together! Japanese Tattoo, secret garden

First draft for a 3/4 sleeve based on a personal story. The scene is set in her sacred garden. This draft helps our communication as I have to get the drawing ready before my trip to Europe. It’s first quick sketch based on her measures, a translation of all the ideas she wanted in her tattoo. It also sets the mood so that I can start thinking more about flow and how all the elements will merge into each other.

NYC Tattoo Trip

A quick post as I want to say a big thank you to all the NYC People who contacted me for a tattoo design. I am only a student and feel very thankful for your interest. If it all kicks in, the NYC Trip is already looking much closer. To all of you who like my studies. A few more people and I’ll be ready to book the flight. Am looking forward to it! By the way the pic above is a sketch I prepared for a ‘half’ back piece for a lady based on a ukyo-e Print with a yoso touch. We ended up doing something else. Still dreaming of tattooing this to a beautiful soul

Dragon Head Tattoo Study

Dragon Head Tattoo study. The client is quite specific about what he wants. Yet I don’t manage to get away from the traditional look. I have tried so many ways. I guess it will take a while to find out more options. For now I will stick to traditional and will keep thinking of ways of improving this. It is almost like if the spirit was contained within the lines. Note: this one is fairly quick marker and pencil, Ideally I should work on my lines width and variations, textures & shading. I’ll do this if he likes the overall feeling. I initially wanted to go for a more ‘wisdom’ look, he wants more fierce! Here we are! I thank Horitoshi, Horiyoshi III, Shige, Horimouja, Hokusai to mention the obvious for their dragon studies.

Koi & Lotus study for Japanese Tattoo Sleeve

Koi & Lotus Study Based on traditional Japanese/Chinese Sumi Style. Ironically what could be considered as new style Japanese Tattoo if on Skin. I find that painting a lot again for my studies really open my mind and generates more ideas for the tattoos I design. Thanks again to all the tattoo artists who brought Japanese Tattoo with the painting qualities & the Sumi feel. I have in mind here Shige, Gotch & Gakkin. But I thanks all of you! Painting a reflection of the subconscious to be carved on the skin. This is going to be a beautiful piece when I finish with it. I feel it! this detail is to be used in a sleeve design with a lot more elements. Here I wanted to explore the depth and what I call multi layer carving. Also working out harmony and composition. It might not be obvious on screen But when looking at it on paper, what I really enjoy is the feeling of unity of each element, and the elements coming together. I.e. I can look at the lotus or the Koi without being disturbed by anything, or the koi and the lotus & water as a unit, yet I can look at the overall picture and still see it as a ’simple’ image at the first gaze, while wonder in details and textures if I want. This is a fairly quick first study! Looking forward to see how I evolve with this. Anyway! blurb! I’ll keep working

Dragon Tattoo Sleeve

First Draft of a Dragon Sleeve so that I can visualise and discuss with the client. This is done very fast to have some kind of idea. The final design will be unique for this client and include a lot more depth and only black and white. I always like to take it slowly and discuss the concept in depth before marking the skin. it is kind of slowly assisting at the growth in the womb before the birth i.e. The first lines in the skin. We have now decided that it would include more lotuses (which I am somehow tempted to make soft pinks and white – would be very nice contrast with the back and grey, we have also decided that it would cover almost half of the back. I wasn’t too sure about this, but will take the time to draw it anyway. Better try on paper first. In any case, I’ll make sure that it can still be balanced and coherent as a back piece in case he decides to expand at a later stage. Then We’ll have a good spring board to start drawing on the skin, adapting flow, placement, etc. I have got a feeling this preparation sketch is going to take a while! Stay tuned to see the evolution!

Japanese Koi Tattoo, Sleeve Study

Japanese Koi Sleeve Study. I wanted to study Horimouja’s Kois while giving it my style. Event tho I call this a sleeve design, The focus has been on the chest panel, Feeling the growth of the elements from the bottom to the top. You’ll notice a part of a dragon’s body on the right hand side. This in relation to the Koi’s potential of becoming dragon when climbing up a waterfall. Sometimes also reffered to as a koi on Earth is a dragon in Heaven. I did not feel like using a koi/dragon shape to indicate the transformation. I feel that transformation as a metaphor can happen instantly. You could also imagine the two ‘entities’ living in ‘parallel’ dimensions, at the same time reflecting each other while both maintaining their physical appearances (All is interconnected). Giving you the feeling that you are still seeing the Koi but the dragon is present and defined. Anyway, Just playing with an idea. It could be a Koi at the front an Dragon at the back. Enjoy. I feel it’s incomplete as a sleeve and more details should be included as a matter of personal style, but I really enjoyed the study and the flow! Enjoy! Y.
