The Yoso tattoo Blog is an atempt to document observations and resources regarding Tattoo culture and the world around it, and to promote the work of Yoso aka Horitama who studies Tattooing in Miyazaki, Japan. Every mark is a sign that creates meaning, the Act of tattoing oneself, or getting a tattoo is an ancestral and transcendental tradition. Yoso tries to share what he discovers about the deeper meaning and the cultural context of this fascinating art form that has coexisted with life & Communities since the dawn of time.
YOSO aka Horitama PROFILE
Initially trained as an artist following European traditions at the Royal Academy of Arts in Brussels. Yoso moved to England to pursue his studies in painting after which he established himself as an artist/art director in London where he has lived for 10 years. His focus has always been on visual arts, including graphic design, digital design, painting, objects, murals, video projections, and the creation of environments and brands. The last 5 years of his designer carreer, most of his work has been focused on commercial work, including Clients such as Nike, Diesel, FIFA, BMG, MTV, The Book of Cool along Experimental & activist work in more underground scenes and club nights, an attempt to find an equilibrium a la dr Jekkyl and mr. Hide. His work and collaborations have been shown & reviewed in numerous festivals, publications & exhibitions around the world, academic or DIY!
After years of collaborations & Travelling with artists and people from all walks of life and having experimented with various techniques and ideas. following the impact of his training at the Shaolin Temple in London, Buddhism and Zen became an integral part of his life where new answers had to be found, in essence to define what it meant to be true to his soul, as we say in our jargon, for the good of all sentient beings. Life brought Yoso towards a simplicity of life in Japan where he studies Japanese Arts & Japanese Culture with a focus on Tattoo & Reiki practice. Japan is one of the countries that has a beautiful visual tradition still alive and also some of the most creative contemporary design available in the world today. He perceives Traditional Japanese Arts not only as a visual style or a trend, but a way of working and living in harmony!
Although Yoso only started tattooing in 2005, 18 years of experimental work and studies of visual traditions have shaped his personal approach to art; beauty, spiritual development and exchange being what drives Yoso in every breath and every line he draws. Conceptual in its approach, but more importantly a true respect for everyone he accepts to tattoo.
If you wish to get tattooed by Yoso, get in touch. Don’t expect the shop experience. It usually starts with a first meeting or a few emails to discuss the style and the motivation behind the tattoo. After which Yoso will take you to a series of designs, exploring meaning and symbolism, then craft a unique design until you feel it reflects your journey and is ready to be carved into the skin. A timeless process to enjoy!
Love and Peace

Hi, Great blog, very nice tattoos!
I was wondering if you have any pictures of a chrysanthemum tattoo.
I want to see how that flower looks like on the skin.
I really want that tattoo, but I’m not shure yet.
Again, great blog, the best tattoos I’ve seen so far!

Great blog Yoso, very informative. One Japanese tattoo artist that wasn’t mentioned is HoriYamato (??) a.k.a. Akilla of Ikebukuro’s Horitoshi family.
This guy is pretty well known in the underground…
His shop is called “Tattoo Soul” and it’s on the 4th floor of the same building that Honey Tattoo is on (in your blog roll).
Hi, im travelling to Singapore in September and am extremely interested in getting a sak yant tattoo, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Yoso,
Can you please explain me the meaning of the tattoo where Kintaro is riding/wrestling a giant carp? What actually this scene means? why is he holding the giant Koi?
I’m thinking about getting this tattoo soon, but before being inked, looking for more meaning of this particular scene,
Many Thanks,

Hi Yoso:
I’m in California and the only person I know here that does Tebori is Horitaka. Unfortunately he has a two year waiting list and last but not least he can’t do the design I want because it’s too small. If you don’t know anybody else in California who could do the job can recommend to me someone in Japan that could do it that doesn’t have a long waiting list and can actually do the size I want (5″ x 5″)? Thank you Yoso
Looking forward to get your feedback from SHige!
Is it going to be commercial/advertising only site now ? It was such a great one before – in fact it was the only one containing so much information on tattoos, even including those adds from time to time, and all I see for the past few days is only adds.
Thanks for the time spent on posting previous articles.
Best regards.
Hello Khaed! Thank you for your comments!
We truelly appreciate your enjoy the effort and the love we put in this!
No it is not going to ever become a commercial/advertising site!
Yes we will start selling some products! That will be in the goodies section! We’ll also make posts about some products we like!
It is true this week! We’ve been testing some stuff! And playing around!
you’re right!
It kind of look commercial
But don’t worry! Once we have tested what we need! and set up the system! We’ll get back to where we were! The fact is that a few people have contacted us to get them some Japanese publications!
So we’re building an engine so that we can help the people who want to get those publications through us! We’re soon complete with it! Then we’ll refresh some of our posts!
Arigato!

Howdy, thanks a lot for the reply, I, too, appreciate your hard work, and as a regular reader can tell you did a lot of good work, so when I saw all those recent articles I really thought this site is done. Im very glad I was wrong and will spread good word about this site.
Best regards,
Khaed
I thank you !
This site will only be gone when I die
If my children do not take over it
haha
To be honest, it is true it takes a lot of time. We’re playing with ideas to make some income! But the point is about quality! It will and has always been. The best compromise we have at the moment is to be agent so that we can send Tattoo books and magazines from Japan, as people do request it! Please spread the words
Thank you! Arigato!
Yoso.

Hello Khaed,
What do you think about this?
Yoso Tattoo* Special Services
As a service we want to offer our readers?
Howdy,
Sorry, I wasnt following your blog recently, I think you give great opportunities to obtain fantastic resources on history and tradition of japanese tattoo. Thats something very hard to find and something worth donation. You have my word I sure will donate few $
Regards,
Khaed
Thank you! Arigato! That’s a first
You’re welcome! Very glad you enjoy it!
I love your site! I was hoping you could help me locate a qualified horimono specialist in Hawaii. Hawaii has a large Japanese community and thought that maybe a qualified artist immigrated to Hawaii.
Hello,
We’re sorry we do not know any Tebori master in Hawaii. Hawaii has played an important role as a bridge between the US and Japan for quite a few things! There should be a few people into it. If you really want Japanese style, you’ll have to keep hunting. If you do find one, please let us know!
My initial thoughts would be that you try to meet someone like Keones Nunes. It might be an interesting experience! At least you’ll be sure you meet someone who takes tattoo seriously! See this post if you do not know about him http://tattoo.yoso.eu/tattoo/2008/12/26/skin-stories-keones-nunes-perpetual-growth/
Thank you
Y.

In my experience, it is best to travel and see what happens on the path. However,

shige@yellowblaze >> http://www.yellowblaze.net/
